Moor End Lane update: 5 July 2024

Information for residents

Ground collapse at Moorend Houses, Silkstone Common

We understand that the ground collapse near Moorend Houses will be causing concern and disruption for a number of you and we thank you for your patience and understanding during the current situation.

Weekly update

We had a positive meeting with our contractor this week to discuss the site and agree dates for the preliminary works, as follows:

  • Work will start on the car park during week commencing 15 July, probably towards the middle of the week. This should take no more than a week to complete. It will provide parking for up to 20 cars, as well as space for bin storage. We’ve attached a copy of the car park layout and location, as requested. During this time we will try to keep disruption to a minimum but if you do have any concerns, please let us know.
  • The access road survey and drainage survey are also scheduled to take place during week commencing 15 July.
  • Pre-condition surveys have been completed at 6 properties. We will provide copies of the reports to those residents shortly. The remaining 4 property surveys will be completed on 15 July, as agreed with residents. We will complete a further survey once the works are complete.

In our previous update, we committed to providing further information on the following:

  • Telemetric monitoring equipment: the product details for the tilt beam solution can be found here: Tilt Beam | Senceive. We’ve also attached an image showing where we have used this on other sites. We have agreed with residents which properties will have monitoring studs and which will have the tilt beam and will install this monitoring equipment on 10 July.
  • We’ve attached a proposed emergency plan. As you will see, this will mean the temporary removal of fencing and walls between some properties. We will discuss this and the positioning of gates with residents and your appointed engineer ahead of the works starting. The walls and fencing will be reinstated once the works are completed.

Next steps

As soon as residents give us authority to engage with Wardell Armstrong, we will contact their engineer to share and discuss our plans for the mine shaft.

We have provisionally scheduled to start the works on the mine shaft before the end of July, but this is subject to change depending on the timing and outcome of the discussions with Wardell Armstrong.

Once we start the works on the mine shaft, a representative from the Coal Authority will be available on site one evening a week to speak to residents about any concerns or issues, and to confirm things are progressing as planned. We will provide dates and times in our weekly update once the works begin.

In the meantime, we will continue to speak to residents individually about their circumstances and concerns, as well as via the represented contact.

Next update:

We will provide a further update on Friday 12 July.
