Operating the scheme: how to contact us

The site is operated by the Coal Authority as part of the Water & Abandoned Metal Mines (WAMM) Programme. The WAMM Programme is a partnership between the Coal Authority, the Environment Agency and Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs).

The scheme started operating in September 2024. For the first few months of operation, only one treatment pond will be used, and so most of the mine water will bypass the treatment ponds without being treated. It was a condition of the planning permission that we start operating with only one treatment pond until we can demonstrate that the scheme does not cause an odour nuisance. Once all three treatment ponds are in normal operation, we intend to remove the harmful metals from all of the mine water.
When it becomes fully operational, we expect the scheme to remove at least 90% of the zinc and cadmium found in the mine water, releasing clean water back into the River Nent.
