We hold a unique and extensive collection of data and information that details Britain’s mining legacy and its impacts on the environment. This includes locations of 170,000 mine entries along with surface and underground workings that sit beneath approximately 25% of properties in Great Britain. Combined with our people’s expertise, this information sits at the centre of everything we do. Our data, mining reports and advisory services support planning authorities, homeowners and developers to enable safe growth and confident decision-making in coalfield areas. To remain Fit for the Future and deliver on our data and information ambitions, we continue to invest in the technology and services that maintain and deliver this data. Over the last three years we have successfully migrated our mining data and the systems that support many of our frontline digital services to the cloud[1].
This shift to the cloud brings wide-ranging benefits and aligns with government priorities around value for money, service excellence, security and innovation. It allows us to focus on delivering outcomes for our customers and stakeholders, rather than on the maintenance of servers and associated infrastructure, whilst delivering systems that are more efficient, resilient, scalable and secure. And by leveraging cloud-native practices we are enabling faster, more consistent and error-free deployments which reduces the cost and time it takes to prototype, develop and deploy new services.
Now that we’ve completed our transition to the cloud, we’re exploring further opportunities to unlock its potential. Embracing the cloud is not just a technical upgrade, it’s a foundation for the next generation of digital systems that will drive innovation, future-proof our operations and deliver better outcomes for the public and our customers.
[1] The “cloud” refers to a network of remote servers that host, manage and process data and applications over the internet, allowing users to access computing resources without owning or maintaining their own physical infrastructure. ↩︎
