Alexander Street update: 11 December 2024

Following on from our last communication to you in October, we wanted to provide a further update on our works taking place in your area.

We recognise that you may be concerned following the temporary works that have been taking place at a neighbouring property and we wanted to reassure you that we are continuing to monitor any movement on this property and adjoining properties as part of our investigations.

To fully understand the potential ground movement and any effect on surrounding properties, we would like to put in place a wider monitoring programme, in and around Alexander Street. This will help us to better understand the impacts from any possible coal mining subsidence in the surrounding area and provide reassurance to residents that their properties may not be affected.

Our teams will be in contact over the next few days to discuss the monitoring programme with you and request your permission to install the monitoring equipment on Monday 16 December. Please rest assured that our monitoring equipment is non-intrusive and consists of small metal pins installed to the exterior wall of your property. Once the installation is complete, we will look to monitor your property for a 3 month period and keep you informed of any developments.

We do hope this is acceptable to you but if you don’t have any questions or concerns in the meantime, you can contact us during office hours on 01623 637000.

You may also be aware that the Coal Authority changed its name to the Mining Remediation Authority on 28 November to better reflect the work we do. The statutory responsibilities of the organisation will not change as we continue to have primary responsibilities for managing the coal assets and legacy as defined in the Coal Industry Act 1994 including public safety and subsidence. For more information about the Mining Remediation Authority, please visit www.gov.uk/miningremediationauthority

Thank you for your continued patience whilst we carry out our investigations. We will provide a further update once we have more information about our next steps and will continue to work closely with the directly-affected residents, the local council and utility companies as our work progresses.
