Dunvant Road

Dunvant Road

A JCB digging up the road

In March 2023 a ground collapse was reported outside a property on Dunvant Road in the Killay area of Swansea.

From our historical mining data, the collapse was found to have been caused by unrecorded shallow mine workings in the area and was affecting the public footpath and road itself.

Further investigation and excavation work further revealed that a void beneath the collapse was larger than the initial surface area collapse and extended further into the carriageway. To protect people in the area, we implemented a road closure.

The solution

Extensive ground investigation work has been undertaken to allow our engineers to design a permanent solution to the collapse, which will consist of reinforced concrete slabs spanning the fractured ground below the carriageway and footways.

This complex project has required extensive temporary works design to deal with the utilities services located below the carriageway and both footways.

Next steps

We are now starting the construction phase of the project. The full road closure will remain in place for approximately 16 weeks. Throughout, we will continue to liaise with local residents, Swansea City Council and relevant utilities companies.
