Upcoming Opportunity for Contractors

Overview of the Framework

Over the coming years, the Mining Remediation Authority will be drilling and testing boreholes across the UK to support the assessment and management of rising and recovered mine water in underground coal workings. These boreholes and pumping tests are essential for monitoring and management of mine water in order to prevent environmental impact through timely intervention.

Purpose of Boreholes

Our boreholes will:

  • Target deep underground mine workings
  • Assess water levels and chemistry
  • Serve as key components within our environmental monitoring network
  • Provide data in areas where mineshafts and other monitoring features have been decommissioned or abandoned

Framework Solution

Following mine abandonment, there is a need to monitor mine water behaviour in order to understand its recovery (rate of rise) and its chemistry. The Mining Remediation Authority has relied on mining infrastructure (shafts and boreholes) for monitoring. Gaps in the monitoring network exist, particularly in the deeper, more modern “Super-Mines.” To address these gaps and streamline the delivery of boreholes, the Mining Remediation Authority is developing a framework approach to aid in delivering required solutions effectively.

Framework Lots

The framework* will be divided into five lots:

Lot 1 – Drilling and Borehole Construction

  • Drilling, development and installation of mine water monitoring and/or abstraction boreholes to depths in the likely range 100-700m and at diameters up to and in excess of 300mm
  • Minor design and construction-related tasks such as specification development or simple borehole design and headworks construction

Lot 2 – Borehole and Pumping Testing

  • Low complexity pumping tests with minimal treatment (e.g. suspended solids removal) and short duration (<3months)

Lot 3 – Borehole Cleaning, Maintenance & Rehabilitation

  • Borehole cleaning services such as brushing, jetting, chemical treatments, clearance pumping
  • Works on Mining Remediation Authority existing boreholes including former exploration bores, operational mine water and gas management boreholes, and purpose-drilled monitoring and abstraction boreholes

Lot 4 – Consultancy Services

  • Borehole design and specification, including identification of sites and targets
  • Borehole construction supervision and construction quality assurance

Lot 5 – Pumping and Mine Water Treatment (Complex)

  • Design of temporary treatment systems for environmentally compliant discharge of mine waters during test pumping
  • May include sampling, analysis, bench testing, and pre-test small-scale pilot trials
