Thornwood Avenue update: December 2023

Information for residents

Ground collapse – Thornwood Avenue, Ayr

This fact sheet provides information about the recent ground collapse on Thornwood Avenue and the work that the Coal Authority will be required to carry out.

We understand that the ground collapse on Thornwood Avenue will be causing concern and disruption for a number of you and we thank you for your patience and understanding during the current situation. The Coal Authority were called on to site on Sunday 26th March due to a collapse within the road and grass area on Thornwood Avenue. The site has been secured to create a safe exclusion zone.

Mineshaft Remediation Works and Reinstatement

Remediation works to the mineshaft are now complete. Our contractors are currently on site installing chambers to house monitoring equipment and we anticipate these works being completed by Friday 22nd December. Drilling contractors will return to site on 9th January 2024 and will be on site carrying out installation of long term monitoring equipment, these works are anticipated to last up to two weeks. Full reinstatement of the road will follow.

How will the works affect me?

We thank you for your patience and understanding throughout this process and appreciate your cooperation with the remaining works. As a result of the treatment works we will be able to reduce the fencing diameter over the Christmas period to allow vehicular access into the previously blocked driveways. However, the road will not be reopened until all works are complete, and the fencing boundary may need to be extended again once the final works commence.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and are grateful for your support and patience. We will highlight any other key dates as works progress.
