Who are we?

The Coal Authority is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). We use our skills to provide services to other government departments and agencies, local governments and commercial partners. We contribute to the delivery of the key UK Government strategies, including the ten point plan for a green industrial revolution, the industrial decarbonisation strategy and commitments to level up the UK. We contribute to the wider environmental, social and economic priorities of the Scottish, Welsh and UK Governments. By sharing our knowledge and expertise we support them, and our partners, to improve the lives of people living on the coalfields and the environment too.

Support for the Scottish Paralegal Association

We have a strong, meaningful relationship with the Scottish Paralegal Association and our customers across Scotland, as well as England and Wales. Last year, 2021-22, we delivered 61,680 coal mining reports to the legal community, geotechnical engineers, environmental consultants, search providers and homebuyers in Scotland.

We have a committed customer service team who work tirelessly to ensure our coal mining reports are dealt with as quickly, effectively and efficiently as possible. We understand the importance of seamless customer service from first contact to delivery of service and beyond. Over the past year, listening to customer feedback, we have made changes to our ordering platform and website.

Customer service quality is something we pride ourselves on but not something we want to stop striving to get better at. By 2025, we hope to achieve a Service Mark accreditation for our customer standards from the Institute of Customer Service, so please keep providing feedback.
