Thornwood Avenue update: May 2024

Information for residents

Ground collapse – Thornwood Avenue, Ayr

This fact sheet provides information about the ground collapse on Thornwood Avenue and the work that we have carried out to repair the mine shaft and make the site safe.

We know that the ground collapse on Thornwood Avenue caused concern and disruption for a number of you and we really appreciate your patience and understanding whilst we carried out our work. We have now finished our work and returned the site to its previous use.

Mineshaft Remediation Works and Reinstatement

We have treated the mine shaft with polyurethane resin grout and installed a central monitoring pipe to the base of the shaft. We can use this to monitor water levels in the future should this be required. We have also installed monitoring equipment and our contractors will be carrying out regular inspections to check the stability of the ground with the information being reviewed by our engineers.

We have fully reinstated all areas of road, parking area and soft landscaping previously affected by the mine shaft collapse and subsequent works. The local council and the Ayrshire Roads Alliance clerk of works have checked our work and are happy with all reinstated areas.
