Camberwell Drive update: January 2024

Information for residents

Mine entry on grass verge at Camberwell Drive

This briefing provides information following the public meeting on 18 January 2024.

Public meeting presentation

Thank you for the opportunity to meet with residents following on from the last public meeting in July. We really appreciated your feedback and have used this to see whether we can return the area to how it was before the collapse.  We have employed a specialist consultant to review all options available for the treatment of the shaft and they have provided us with preliminary designs for the treatment. The solution identified will use a method called permeation grouting. This solution will allow us to return the area to a grassed area and remove the fence following completion of the works.

The work to repair the shaft will consist of three phases and will start in August 2024. We expect the construction works to take up to 12 months. This includes time for utility diversions, treatment of the ground and filling of the shaft. During this time we will need to close a short section of Camberwell Drive to provide the working room that the contractors will need and allow the works to be carried out safely. We will ensure that the access onto Camberwell Drive from Springfield Way is kept open at all times. We appreciate that closing the section of Camberwell Drive will cause disruption for some residents. We will try to limit the duration of these closures and will work closely with Tameside Council to minimise disruption for residents. We will also employ a community liaison officer to provide additional support to the local community during our works.

There are a number of properties which will be more impacted by these works. We will be meeting with those residents shortly to discuss this further and ensure they are provided with additional support.

Next steps

  • We will hold separate, personalised meetings with the immediately impacted residents to understand their needs and to discuss their options during the works.
  • We will instruct the consultant to finalise the design proposals and undertake a tender exercise for the work.
  • We will continue to liaise with Tameside Council to understand any prior approvals and requirements before we start onsite.
  • We will contact utility companies about any required diversions.

We understand your concerns about the disruption whilst these works take place and we will keep you regularly updated with progress on our website. During the meeting residents raised a number of questions which you can see on our community page along with the presentation that we shared on the evening.
